18-month-old boy died after hit by police jeep

An 18-month-old baby boy died here today after he was allegedly hit by a police jeep which was returning after conducting a raid in connection with the blast near the BJP office at Bangalore in April.

Based on an information reportedly given by Kichan Bukari, lodged in the Central Jail at Bangalore in connection with the April 17 blast that left 16 persons injured, one Mohammed Ansar was arrested here today, police said.

While returning, the jeep reportedly hit the baby, playing in front of his house at Anna Nagar in Ukkadam.

The boy was rushed to a private hospital and later to a government hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, police said.
 

Enraged over the death, some 150 persons, including a few from two political parties, gathered near the government hospital, where the post-mortem is being carried out and also at the accident spot, causing tension.

Meanwhile, some residents resorted to picketing on the road.

City Police commissioner A K Vishwanathan and other senior officials visited the spot and assured them that action would be taken following which the crowd disbursed.

Later, the jeep driver, Murugesh was arrested. A case under IPC section 304 A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was registered agaisnt him, police said.
