: An 18-year-old male patient admitted to JIPMER with a ruptured heart and crushed chest following a road mishap at neigbouring Pillayarkuppam village has been saved by doctors, perfusionists and anaesthetists.

The teenager was riding a bicycle when he was knocked down by a bullock cart on July 13, under the impact of which he hit a roadside electric pole, resulting in the injuries.

A JIPMER release today said the boy was first rushed to a private hospital, which referred him to JIPMER. Doctors found massive collection of blood around the heart after he was subjected to echo cardiogram. The massive collection of blood collapsed the front chambers which suggested bleeding from the ruptured heart, it said.

A cardiothoracic surgical team led by Dr B V Sai Chandran, Additional Professor, Department of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, repaired the actively bleeding ruptured area in the heart by direct suture closure. The boy was saved and is fast improving, it said.

Dr Sai Chandran said a patient with such heart injuries would die en route to the hospital whenever there is massive bleeding. Even when they reach hospital only 20 per cent of them have a chance of survival, provided the hospital has full fledged facilities, including heart surgical team with standby perfusionists round the clock, he said.
