182 PhDs awarded by IITs in humanities, social sciences

IITs awarded 182 PhDs for research in subjects like literature, art, culture, history, economics, psychology, sociology, which are taught under humanities and social sciences, in the last three years, the government today said.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said most IITs teach literature, culture, art, history, economics, psychology, sociology etc under humanities and social sciences.

"As reported by IITs, a total of 182 PhDs were awarded in the last three years in these subjects," she said.

According to details provided by the minister, the maximum 43 PhDs were awarded by IIT Bombay followed by 23 by IIT Delhi.
 

In a written reply to another question, Irani said a request had been received from the Assam government for setting up an IIM at Guwahati.

"Presently, there is no decision to open a new IIM in the country," she added.
