An 18th century memorial stone slab has been found on the bank of the sprawling Vaiyapuri Tank in this temple town.

The 64 cm x 45 cm slab has a sculpture of a woman along with two calves sitting on either side, according to archaeologist Narayanamoorthy.

The sculpture had suffered damages. Such memorial stones,in those days were dedicated to persons who played a major role in the community development or protection of the village from any danger.

There were some inscriptions in the tank which throw light on how the famous town of Palani was destroyed by floods once and had been reconstructed later.

The woman would have saved shepherds and cattle herds during a flood, and died in the process, and hence a memorial slab could have been raised for her, he said.
