As many as 19 candidates have filed nomination papers for the December 20 bypoll in Jasdan assembly constituency of Gujarat, an official said Monday.
Today on the last day, 10 candidates, including Avasar Nakiya of the Congress and seven independents, filed their nomination forms, said Gujarat Chief Electoral officer (CEO) S Murli Krishna in a statement here.
"With 10 candidates filing their nomination papers today, the total number of candidates for the Jasdan assembly election bypoll are 19," he said.
All the nomination forms will be scrutinised Tuesday and the last date of their withdrawal is December 6, said the statement.
The by-election was necessitated after sitting Jasdan MLA Kunvarji Bavaliya switched sides from the Congress to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and resigned from the assembly on July 2.
Bavaliya has been fielded from the assembly seat in Rajkot district by the BJP and his main opponent will be Nakiya. The BJP candidate filed his nomination last week.
The vote count will take place on December 23.
