Nineteen children employed in shops and godowns were today rescued from several areas of South Delhi here.

The rescue comes after District Magistrate (South) Niharika Rai ordered SDM to conduct raids in some areas where children were employed.

The children, rescued from Khanpur and Saidulajab areas, have been taken for medical examination.

Based on a tip-off, a team led by SDM (Saket) and another team headed by SDM (Hauz Khas) conducted separate raids in Khanpur and Saidulajab areas alongwith representatives of NGO Bachpan Bachao Aandolan and rescued the children, an official said.

"The teams have sealed a godown, electrical items shop, cycle repair shop, grocery store and dhabas, where these children were working," the official added.

DM Rai said that strict action would be initiated against these establishments as per the law.

Rai appealed to the citizens and businessmen residing and operating in the district not to employ children for work and contribute towards their education and healthy living.
