19 Chinese officials injured in acid attack

Nineteen officials, who were trying to demolish an illegally constructed warehouse in southeast China, were severely injured when the building's owner threw acid on them.

Two villagers were arrested for their suspected roles in yesterday's attack on urban management officers in Xiamen city of Fujian Province, local officials said.

Police said that the officers were demolish an illegally erected warehouse when they had an argument with the building's owner, a 54-year-old surnamed Shao and his son.

Shao then threw a bottle of sulphuric acid from battery causing severe burns.

Demolition of properties by officials for major development projects has become a contentious issue in recent years, with people resenting the administration's highhanded approach, often resulting in clashes.
