A 19-year-old woman, who was physically assaulted for being in a relationship with a man her parents did not approve of, got married today with the help of Rajasthan Women Commission, its chairperson said.

Jaipur-based Jyoti got married to Manish (23) at the commission's office here as per Hindu rituals, Rajasthan Women Commission's Chairman Suman Sharma told PTI.

According to Sharma, the woman could have become a victim of honour killing. She was given electric shocks, drugged and her braid was cut by her family members for being in a relationship with a man she loved.

"The commission took suo motu cognisance of the matter and summoned family members of the couple.

After intense counselling of both the families, wedding was performed in front of family court judges, Sharma said.

Elated with joy, Jyoti said, I am happy to marry the man I loved and also with the wedding which was performed with the consent of both the families.
