A total of 125 silver coins dating back to the 19th century has been unearthed by a man near Kodumudi, 30 km from here, while he was digging the land to lay foundation of his new house.

Erode Tahsildar Annapooranis said the man noticed a mud pot just four feet below the earth after he started digging yesterday.

He removed it and found the coins inside following which he immediately sought the help of the Village Administrative Officer and handed it over to her for verification, she said.

Annapooranis said numismatic experts have verified the coins, with a picture of Queen Victoria engraved on them, which date back to the 1862-1864 period.

Of the 125 coins, 106 were in the value of two annas and four of one Rupee, she said.

The coins were later kept in the Treasury here.
