A food safety team seized around 2,100 kg of vanaspati in Punjab's Kapurthala district today, an official said.

There was no mention of information like nature of the product, name, address of the manufacturer and date of manufacturing on the tins in which it was packed, the official said, adding that such details were mandatory for sealed food items as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging And Labelling) Regulations.

Some samples of vanaspati (a type of thick vegetable oil) were sent to the state food laboratory for analysis. Action will be taken after the report, he said. In Amritsar, the food safety team seized 148 kg of vanaspati at a godown.

"This move by the food department against the food business operators engaged in the unscrupulous business of adulterated and spurious food stuffs will continue in order to ensure that the citizens get pure and healthy food," said K S Pannu, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration, Punjab.
