2,640 people died in AP road accidents so far in 2014

A total of 2,640 people have died in 8,400 road accidents in Andhra Pradesh so far in the current calender year.

As many as 2,640 people lost their lives in 8,400 road accidents reported in the State up to now in 2014 (July 21), said Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister S Raghava Rao while inaugurating a function on road safety at Deputy Transport Commissioner's office here today.

Besides 9,700 people suffered injuries in these mishaps, he said, addressing transport operators and workers.

Most of the accidents took place during night time, Rao said, and expressed concern over lack of adequate road safety measures.
 

To bring down casualties, the Transport Department has decided to depute Motor Vehicle Inspectors to check health condition and fitness level of drivers operating during night hours on National Highways in the State, he added.
