Pakistan security forces today claimed to have foiled a major terror attack with the arrest of two Afghan terrorists from the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province as part of a massive crackdown on anti-social elements in the wake of the Peshawar carnage.

As many as 74 illegal immigrants and 101 locals were also arrested from various parts of Pakistan, according to police.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) foiled a terror attack in Mardan by arresting two alleged Afghan terrorists and recovering explosive material from their possession, they said.

Acting on a tip-off, a CTD team conducted a raid at Doranpur Road and arrested Afghan Muhammad Wazir and Sher Khan, residents of Afghanistan, official sources in the CTD said.

Police said they recovered 10.984 kilogrammes of fine quality explosive, four detonators and five IEDs from their possession.

During preliminary investigation, the accused said they were planning to carry out a terror attack at Mardan tomorrow, an official claimed.

The accused were shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation and a case was registered against them under anti-terrorism laws.

Separately, 74 Afghan immigrants were detained in Hangu district bordering Kurram Agency for living without valid travelling documents, police said.

They were arrested under the Foreigners Act and 36 cases were registered against them.

Raids and search operations were conducted at different areas, including Chapper, Kata Kanari, Bagto, Lafi Banda, Sarak Dana and Kando village of Hangu district.

A total 101 locals were also arrested by the K-P police in the ongoing search and strike operation throughout the province against criminals and anti-social elements.

Huge quantity of arms and ammunition have also been recovered.

Inspections of 1,173 educational institution were also carried out and various institutions were advised to further beef up security arrangements, police said.

Heavily armed militants killed 150 people, 132 of them children, in a bloody December 16 attack on an army-run school in Peshawar, the main town in Pakistan's northwest.
