Two men allegedly trying to steal cattle were arrested after a long chase, police said here today.

"The accused, Shahid (24) and Umar (25), were arrested by the police in the early hours of April 3 and five cows have been recovered," said DCP Monika Bhardwaj.

A country-made pistol and 10 live cartridges have been recovered from the accused.

Based on a tip-off, a team zeroed in on a tempo carrying cows near Kesho Pur Nala. But the occupants refused to stop and sped towards Raghubir Nagar, said the officer.

Further when the tempo reached Pacific Mall it hit a police barricade and then sped towards Khyala despite being told to stop, Bhardwaj said.

"The occupants even hit a PCR vehicle and fired 2-3 rounds at it. But, failing to scare the cops, the tempo was forced stopped at Saraswati Garden after a tyre of the tempo burst when a cop fired at it," said the officer.

Shahid and Umar who tried to flee were nabbed, the officer added.

All the cows have been sent to Shri Krishan Gaushala.
