Two persons were arrested by Nigeria's anti-narcotic police today for trying to smuggle 430 grammes of cocaine to India.

The National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested the two as they were trying to smuggle 430 grammes of substances that tested positive for cocaine.

The NDLEA spokesman Ofoyeju Mitchell said one of the men hid the powdery substance inside the soles of his shoes and this was detected as he was trying to board Etihad airline to India at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The first suspect, Okechukwu Samson Agwueze, 23, was arrested when the drug was found inside the sole of the shoe he wore during the screening.

His cousin, Ogbonna Onwumere, 38, who sponsored his trip, was also arrested and currently being interrogated by narcotic investigators.

Samson said his cousin lured him into trafficking drugs despite the fact that he had a work in Nigeria.

"My cousin, Ogbonna Onwumere promised to sponsor me to India so that I can work and further my education. He invited me to Lagos that everything was set for me to travel and gave me the shoe to wear that mine was old. He never told me there was drug in it."

Ogbonna, an importer of textiles confessed that he wanted to use Okechukwu to smuggle the drugs to India.

Similar arrest was made in August 2012 when the anti-narcotic body had arrested a 26-year-old man at the same airport for concealing 8.5kg of methamphetamine inside metal pipes and trying to smuggle such into a plane flying to New Delhi.
