Authorities in Iraq say two separate bombings targeting commercial streets in Baghdad have killed five people.

Police officials say a bomb went off tonight in a commercial street in the western district of Ghazaliyah, killing two people and wounding six others.

Later on, three people were killed and eight others were wounded in a bomb blast in a northeastern suburb of the capital, said police.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to release the information to reporters.

Violence has spiked in Iraq following a security deadly crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April. More than 8,000 people have been killed since the start of the year, according to United Nations estimates.
