Police today claimed to have busted a gang of car thieves by arresting two culprits and recovering over a dozen stolen vehicles at their instance here.
Mohammad Asif Wani of Gurez in Bandipora district and Bashiq Bhat of Puhroo-Sarnal in Anantnag were apprehended by a special team, which was formed after an organised group of car lifters took advantage of massive floods in September last and succeeded in stealing cars from and around north zone of Srinagar city, a police spokesman said.
He said the duo were residing at Namchibal in downtown and Budshah Nagar in uptown city and had lifted 14 cars - seven in the jurisdiction of police station Maharaj Gunj, four in Safakadal, two in Khanyar and one in Rainawari.
The special team headed by a sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) succeeded in unearthing the module, the spokesman said, adding all the stolen cars were recovered at the instance of the arrested persons.
