Two constables of the Delhi Civil Defence department were arrested for allegedly extorting money from people by posing as police personnel, police said.

Nine mobile phones, a motorcycle along with 67 voter identity cards have been recovered from their possession, they said.

The accused -- Sukhram (28) and Suresh (36) -- were arrested yesterday, from Bawana.

Along with other things, a Delhi Police uniform, a Civil Defence uniform have also been recovered, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said.

Based on a mobile snatching complaint lodged on March 2, a robbery case was registered and several teams were constituted to nab the accused.

Both are constables with Delhi Civil Defence. Due to a financial crunch, Sukhram started committing crimes, Gupta said.

He purchased the Delhi Police Uniform from Kingsway camp and was using it to extort money from general public, Gupta said.

Suresh had left his job and due to a financial crunch he also started committing crimes with his associate Sukhram, the officer said.
