2 die after falling from tractor-trolley into flooded river

Two women died while four others were rescued today after they fell off a tractor-trolley into the flooded Shivnath river in Bemetara district of the state.

The mishap occurred close to Jaung village under Bemetara police station limits this afternoon, Bemetara SP T Ekka told PTI.

The incident when the tractor-trolley was crossing Anicut, a dam found on the streams, which serves to control the flow of an irrigation system.

At-least 25 relatives, mostly women, were heading towards Kurud village from Raka village in the tractor-trolley for a family programme, he said.

The vehicle's driver was also one their family member, he added.
 

While crossing the anicut near Jaung village on Shivnath river, the driver lost control over the vehicle and the front left wheel of the tractor went off the road and hung on the bridge, Ekka said.

Owing the jerk due to the mishap, six women fell into the river while others immediately jumped off the vehicle to save themselves, he said.

However, the tractor was stuck on the bridge of the anicut and did not fell into river, he added.

A police team along with rescue personnel rushed to the spot and four women were rescued, he said adding their condition is stated to be normal.

The bodies of two other women - Padmini Bai (35) and Anshi Bai (60) were fished out of the river, Ekka said.

A case has been registered in this connection and a probe is on, the SP said.
