2 die after having alcohol laced with sedatives

Two picnickers died and nine others were under treatment after allegedly having alcohol laced with sedatives at Ketugram in Burdwan district.

Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said the nine, who were part of the 24-member group from a nearby village, were picnicking on a river bank yesterday.

Talking to other members of the picnic party, police came to know some of them had mixed sedative tablets with liquor and fainted soon after consuming it, the officer said today.

While two were declared brought dead on being taken to Katwa Sub-divisional Hospital, nine others were under treatment at the same hospital, he said.
 

The deceased were identified as Purno Das and Arun das, both around 25 years of age.

The SP said police were investigating from where the liquor was procured by the picnickers and collecting the tablet strips.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Burdwan, Golok Roy said a medical team has been sent to the Ketugram locality from where the picnic party came.
