Two directors of a Mumbai-based private company were arrested for allegedly duping people of lakhs of rupees on pretext of seeking investment, police said today.

The accused, identified as Varsha Satpalkar and Janardan Parulekar, both directors of Maitreya Plots and Structure Private Limited, were arrested yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sachin Gore said here.

They were produced in a Nashik court last evening, which sent them to police custody till February 8, he said in a release.

The firm, since 2011 launched different schemes and lured people into investing a total amount of Rs 3.59 lakh but did not give any return nor allotted them any plots, the ACP said.

Agents of the company yesterday gathered in the court premises and shouted slogans against the duo's arrest, he said, adding they also allegedly manhandled journalists present there.

Gore said the arrest was made after receiving a complaint from a city-based investor, who had approached Sarkarwada police station here, following which a case was registered against the accused.
