Two minor girls drowned in a pond at Nilagiri in Odisha's Balasore district Sunday.
The incident took place when the girls were taking bath in the pond and one of them slipped into the water, police said.
The other girl also met with the same fate while trying to save her friend.
Villagers and fire brigade personnel fished out the two girls from the pond and rushed them to nearby Nilagiri hospital where they were declared brought dead, doctors said.
