Two persons were arrested at Rajahmundry railway station for allegedly trying to illegally transport cash worth Rs 15 lakh and silver worth Rs 70 lakh to Tamil Nadu, police said today.

The accused, identified as Pallani Swamy Perumal and Murlidhar, were arrested last night and the cash as well as silver were recovered from them, Rajahmundry (Urban) Superintendent of Police Ravikumar Murthy said.

"Based on credible information, police launched a search at the Rajahmundry Railway station last night and found that the two accused were illegally carrying 186.44 kg silver and Rs 15 lakh cash kept in travel bags," Murthy said.

The action was taken to curb any misuse of money during the polls, he added.

The market value of the seized silver, which they were carrying in the form of 157 bars, is Rs 70 lakh, DSP (south zone) Ashok Kumar said.

"During the interrogation, they claimed that they were taking the silver bars to Salem in Tamil Nadu to make ornaments and bring it back to jewellers in Rajahmundry. However, they are unable to produce any evidence or proof to the seized money and silver," he added.

The police registered a case and further interrogation is on.
