A fraud case of trying to sell Kashmir-bound goods worth Rs 80 lakh by staging an accident, was cracked by the police after the arrest of two persons including a driver.
"Police first spotted broken parts of a truck and a few bundles near Maroog on the highway, but no injured persons were found near the accident site during search operation," a police officer said.
The matter was informed to IGP Jammu Zone, Rajesh Kumar Yadav and DIG Ramban Range, Ashkoor Ahmed Wani and a special team was constituted by SP Ramban, Anil Magotra, headed by DSP Ramban to investigate the case, he said.
The special team detained the driver-cum-owner of the truck and after interrogation it came to light that he had loaded 179 bundles of shawls, curtains and other clothing material from a transport company in Amritsar for delivery to the company's Srinagar office.
As a part of a conspiracy, the driver dumped the goods at a house in Sidhra Jammu, from where it was to be sold off by two others, the officer said.
158 bundles were offloaded in the house and the driver took the vehicle on the highway with the rest of the goods and deliberately drove it off a gorge, to make it look like an accident, he said adding, their intention was not only to sell the stolen goods, but also to get benefit of the truck's insurance policy.
One of the conspirators was arrested after his call records and mobile tower locations were tracked and a search is on for the third person, the officer added.
