Two persons have been arrested for allegedly being involved in a heist last month in which cash and jewellery worth crores was robbed at gunpoint from a jeweller in East Delhi's Geeta Colony.

The accused, identified as Punit Arora alias Peenu and Tanish alias Tanni, were yesterday arrested following a tip-off by the Special Staff of North-West district from Haiderpur bus stop on Outer Ring road. Looted jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh was recovered from their possession.

Police said that the case goes back to May 10 when Rajesh, owner of a jewellery shop in Chandni Chowk, fell prey to robbers while returning home in his car with three bags containing jewellery of Rs 2-3 crore and Rs 3-4 lakh in cash.

"At about 9 P.M., when they were close to the SDM's office in Geeta Colony, a car suddenly intercepted their vehicle and four armed youths emerged from it who snatched their jewellery and cash at gunpoint and then threw them out of the car," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) N Gnanasambandan, adding that the assailants had also taken the victim's car while fleeing the spot.

The case in the matter was registered with Geeta Colony police.

Yesterday, specific information was received that two persons allegedly involved in the case would come to Haiderpur to dispose of the looted jewellery. A trap was laid and, at about 7:15 P.M., the two accused were nabbed and a bag containing jewellery was recovered from their possession, police said.

Police said that both the arrested persons have confessed about their involvement in the Geeta Colony robbery case.
