2 killed, 4 injured as truck driver tries to save pedestrian

Two persons were killed and four others were injured when a speeding truck whose driver was trying to save a pedestrian overturned in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar area in the wee hours today, police said.

The cleaner of the truck, and the pedestrian who suddenly came in front of the truck while trying to cross the road, were killed in the incident, they said.

Four occupants of the truck -- the driver and three labourers -- were injured in the accident and were recuperating at hospitals, said the police.

The truck cleaner has been identified as Ravi, 28, and the pedestrian's whereabouts were yet to be ascertained, police said.
 

"The truck was returning to Baghpat when the accident took place at Pushta Road in Gandhi Nagar at around 4 am. Despite efforts, the truck hit the pedestrian and then broke through a road divider and overturned on the opposite side of the road, loosing two of its front wheels," said a senior police official.

Pawan, an injured labourer, said that the truck driver lost

control while trying to save the pedestrian who came on the road all of a sudden and also because as the vehicle was speeding.

"The truck was being driven at a high speed by Anil who belongs to my village. Suddenly he noticed a man crossing the road and steered the truck to the right to avoid hitting him. That led to him losing control," he said in his police complaint.

The injured were rushed to Swamy Dayanand hospital and Lok Nayak hospital where they were stated to be out of danger. Police registered a case of causing death by negligence on the basis of Pawan's complaint. The truck driver will be arrested after he was discharged from the hospital, they said.
