At least two persons were killed and several others injured when policemen opened fire during a clash with residents of Syanja district in western Nepal today.

Violence erupted at Chapakot village this afternoon when local residents hurled stones at a police post after claiming that police did not investigate the suspected murder of a woman named Maya Biswakarma.

However, police officials said the woman had committed suicide at her residence a fortnight ago.

District police chief Krishna Bahadur Raut said, "The police fired in the air in self-defence after locals hurled stones and bricks at the police post."

Two persons were killed in the firing, reports said. Eight policemen were among the injured, according to officials.

The wounded were taken to a hospital in Pokhara.
