Two militants of Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT), which is opposing the upcoming Assembly polls in Assam were killed in an encounter with a joint police and Army team in Karbi Anglong district ahead of the April 4 voting in the area, police said today.
The insurgents exchanged fire with the joint police and Army team last night at Borlangso under Chokikhola police station and were identified, district superintendent of police Debojit Deuri said.
The arms and ammunition recovered from the slain ultras include one HK-36 rifle, two magazines of 45 live ammunition, a .22 pistol with live ammunition, a 303 pistol with eight ammunition and two INSAS rifles.
The KPLT had issued threats to media persons recently after journalists at a meeting in Diphu Press Club unanimously decided not to publish the extremist outfit's press releases calling for bandhs opposing the hustings scheduled in the district on April 4.
