At least two labourers were injured when an under-construction culvert near a proposed rail bridge on Paradip-Haridaspur rail line caved in, the police said.

Construction work was on for the laying of 82 km long Paradip-Haridaspur rail line when the mishap took place near Tikarapanga village close to the Mahanadi River.

Chief Project Manager, Rail Vikash Nigam Limited, J Parida said "The mishap took place when the construction workers were raising an iron pillar structure for the culvert."

"The clamp which stood as support to the structure, loosened and an iron structure collapsed. Two workers were trapped inside the twisted iron rods and sustained injuries," Parida said.

"They have been shifted to hospital and are out of danger. We have asked the construction agency to submit a report stating the cause of the mishap. Steps are being taken to avert recurrence of such mishap in future," he added.
