32-year-old Sunil Kumar, who hails from Firojpur in Punjab but presently resides at Chauhan Mohalla in Delhi, was arrested after police found during investigation that he was in regular contact with a gang in Mewat area, which is active in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.
He was taken into custody and during interrogation he revealed the name of Mohammed Aslam, 37, of Mewat in Haryana. Aslam, who presently lives in Loni in Uttar Pradesh, was also arrested.
"The accused were involved in a number of cases of vehicle theft and supply of stolen vehicles to Punjab. Both of them confessed to their involvement in the shooting case at Hira Jewellers in Pitampura on June 3, in which one of their gang member was killed after guards opened fire in order to prevent them from taking away a vehicle belonging to the jewellers," said P Karunakaran, DCP North-West District.
On the night of the incident, two persons tried to break open the locks of a jeep parked in front of Hira Jewellers shop to escape with the vehicle.
Two guards -- Krishan Kumar and Lalit Kumar--, who were on duty, warned the robbers but they threatened them and later fired at them.
The guards returned fire in order to prevent them from taking away the vehicle. A bullet hit one of the robbers who was driving the vehicle and he was later found dead by the police.
