2 minor Assamese girls, forced into sex trade, rescued; 1 held

The police here have arrested a person and rescued two minor Assamese girls, who were pushed into prostitution after being lured to the national capital on the pretext of getting them jobs.

The accused, Mujahid alias Surya, was arrested from near the IT Park at Shastri Park here on July 26, Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said today.

The two girls, who were abducted from Hojai in Assam in May, were found with the accused, he added.

The girls, aged 12 and 13, were told by the accused that he would get them employed as maids in Delhi, said another police officer, adding that they were also told that they would be rich by the time they turned 30.
 

After the girls were handed over to Mujahid, in exchange for money, by a man who had brought them from Assam, the accused forced them into prostitution, the police said.

The accused used to charge anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 to the "clients" of the girls, they added.

The girls were produced before the Child Welfare Committee and were currently lodged in a girls' home here, the police said.
