2 minors die of encephalitis; toll 591

A child each from Kushinagar and Basti succumbed to the disease yesterday at BRD Medical college hospital, official sources said.

One more child, suffering from the disease, has been admitted to the medical college.

As many as 3,501 patients of Japanese Encephalitis, JE and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome were admitted to different government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions this year, of which 591 died.

This year, patients from Bihar and Nepal were also admitted to BRD college, the sources said, adding that 52 patients from Bihar and three from Nepal succumbed to the disease in the hospital this year.

Japanese and viral encephalitis, known as AES, have claimed lives of thousands of poor in the state, especially in eastern region, during the last few years.
