Two members of a family today were run over by an express train in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar when they were crossing the tracks, Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

A 50-year-old woman and her two-year-old granddaughter were mowed down by an express train while they were crossing over to the other side of the platform at Patia railway station, the GRP said.

They were residents of Hindol in Dhenkanal district, police said.

Five members of a family were on their way to Puri, the police said.

While three members of the family managed to cross the tracks, the old woman and her granddaughter got stranded midway while crossing the tracks, the police said.

As a result, they were mowed down by the express train, the police added.

The GRP recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.

GRP personnel from Mancheswar started an investigation into the incident.
