The bodies of two newborn girls, with stray dogs huddling around, were today found in a drain in Batala area of the district.

According to the police, a farmer in Ranger Nangal village noticed that some dogs had assembled near the drain and on a closer look he found the bodies.

He later informed the police.

Police believed that the infants were a day old and their parents had dumped them because they were girls.

Punjab, like Haryana, is infamous for its skewed sex ratio, with practice of female foeticide still prevalent in some parts.

The police have registered a case and further probe into the matter was on.
