According to police, the accused Charles Ozonevarupaak (30) and Aaifanie Odhoh (29), used to hoodwink the girls by uploading fake profiles, showing the grooms to be rich and handsome, on matrimonial and other social networking websites and would take money from girls on the promise of marriage.

The Nigerian duo was arrested from the city based on a complaint filed by the girl.

"The arrested accused had duped the girl to the tune of Rs one crore," DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

"One of the arrested accused came across the victim on a matrimonial site. Both of them had chats for several months, after which the accused sought money from her stating that he wanted to do a business abroad," he added.

According to Kulkarni, the girl provided the money to the accused in several instalments. However, after he got the money, the accused started avoiding the girl, following which she grew suspicious and lodged a complaint with the MHB Colony Police station in suburban Borivali.

After arresting the duo, the crime branch recovered several international SIM cards and other electronic equipment from their residence in the city. Police said total 10 members operated the racket.

Police said several young girls, looking for grooms, have fallen in their traps and further investigation in the case was on.
