Two employees of the Sales Tax department, including a woman, were today arrested for allegedly accepting bribes from a tax consultant, the Anti Corruption Bureau said.

The Navi Mumbai unit of the ACB Thane arrested Sales Tax Inspector Rajashri N Deshpande (57), who demanded Rs 500 and Sales Tax officer (class II) Pravin Chandu Shetty, who demanded Rs 300 from a tax consultant, Superintendent of Police of Thane ACB, Sandeep Karnik told PTI.

The complainant ran a tax consultancy firm and he wanted VAT registration number from the office of the Sales Tax Office Raigadh Division in Navi Mumbai, Karnik said.

However, when he approached the office for the registration number, Deshpande and Shetty demanded bribes from him, following which he approached the ACB.

A trap was laid in the Sales Tax office at Navi Mumbai and both of them were trapped while accepting bribes, the ACB said.
