2 SER employees felicitated for averting major train accidents

Two employees of South Eastern Railway were felicitated for averting two major accidents involving goods trains, SER sources said today.

Senior goods guard Awadhesh Kumar Singh of Chakradharpur division during his duty in a goods train on June 14 had detected a hot axle and stopped the train at Lotapahar station, an SER spokesman said.

The affected wagon, eighth from the brake van was then detached from the train, the spokesman said.

By virtue of his alertness and devotion to duty, Singh prevented a major mishap and saved railway assets, the spokesman said.

In another incident, pointsman Thakurdas Chatterjee of Adra Division while on duty on February two, noticed smoke emitting from an axle box of one of the wagons of a train and immediately stopped the train, thus preventing a serious accident.
 

During examination he found a hot axle in the 39th wagon from the engine, the spokesman said.

An hot axle, if not detected in time, can lead to fracturing of the axle and cause a major derailment.

SER general manager S N Agrawal felicitated and awarded the two employees at the zonal railway's headquarters at Garden Reach here yesterday.
