Two surrendered militants who had joined the police as special police officers (SPO) today went missing with their service rifles from police station Doda in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Two surrendered militants identified as Gul Mohammed and Riyaz Ahmed had joined as SPO at police station Doda two years ago after they had surrendered to the police, today escaped with their service rifles," a police officer told PTI.

He said that the duo were posted at police station Doda and have escaped with an INSAS and an AK-47 assault rifles.

"Police teams have been constituted to nab them," he said.

He said that it was premature to say that both the SPOs had any links with the militant outfits and had escaped to rejoin those outfits, but he did not rule out the motive.

"We cannot rule out this situation that they have taken the weapon to rejoin militant outfits, as in the past there has been a case in Kashmir where a police constable ran away with two assault rifles and joined the militant outfit," the officer said.
