Two undertrials today allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves inside the modern jail here.

Jail Superintendent Paramjit Singh Sandhu said Ravi (25) and Tarun (40) committed suicide in the jail this morning.

Both the undertrials were drug addicts. Tarun was facing trial under NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act while Ravi was in jail for wheat theft case, he said.

Ravi was found hanging in the washroom of his barrack while Tarun's body was found hanging in the washroom of drug de-addiction centre inside the jail, he added.

Both of them used cloth of their headgear to hang themselves, he said.

However, family members of both the undertrials alleged that they have been murdered and staged dharna outside the civil hospital here.

Dharna was lifted after DSP Mohinder Singh assured family members that proper investigation would be done in both the cases.

Meanwhile, District and Sessions Judge R S Rai has ordered a judicial probe into the matter.

Sandhu said that there were 3,600 inmates in the jail and more than two thousand inmates were drug addicts.
