A two-year-old girl is suspected to have been washed away in the river Rongkai in South West Garo Hills district, police said today.

Superintendent of Police, Bobby W Momin said the girl had gone to the river with her mother to take a bath yesterday. However, after her bath, the mother could not find her daughter. After a search, the sandals of the girl were found on the river bank.

A missing complaint was filed at the Zikzak police outpost yesterday.

Incessant rains over the past few days led to rise in water levels across the Garo Hills region with the Rongkai too in full spate.

The police, district disaster management authority and fire and emergency team carried an extensive search but still could not find the girl's body, the officer said.

"We will continue our search once again tomorrow to locate the victim. We believe the girl has been washed away," the SP added.
