Two youths drowned here today after they jumped into a pond in a bid to avoid being caught by cops who were chasing them, police said.
The incident occurred in Kosma township of Ghiror police circle where Dilip Yadav, 18, and Pankaj Yadav, 19, residents of Nibiri village in Firozabad district, drowned while trying to escape, they said.
"They were transporting bricks on a tractor-trolley when they were stopped at Kosma crossing by police for checking. As they tried to speed away, police chased the tractor. The duo jumped from the tractor and ran for safety, but out of fear jumped into a pond and drowned," said SP Deo Ranjan.

The relatives of the deceased, however, alleged foul-play on the police's part.
The parents of the deceased charged the police with "capturing the boys, beating them to death in the police station and tossing their bodies in the pond."
Infuriated villagers later stormed the Kosma police post and thrashed police personnel, injuring one of them.
The SP, who rushed to the site, suspended five police personnel, including incharge of Kosma police post Udaiveer Singh.
"We are waiting for the postmortem examination report on the basis of which we will lodge an FIR," the SP said.
"Facts will be known only after the postmortem report," he added.
