About 20,000 people have been displaced by fresh unrest in Sudan's Darfur region, the UN's World Food Programme said today.
"There's an estimated 20,000 new arrivals, most of whom are women and children," Amor Almagro, the WFP's public information officer, told AFP.
She said they have reached the village of Saniya Deleiba, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the South Darfur state capital Nyala.
A team is heading to the area tomorrow to determine how many are in need.
"At the same time we are also dispatching a convoy carrying 90 tonnes of food," sorghum and lentils, for the new arrivals, Almagro said.
Separate assessment teams were today counting how many people have also arrived at the Kalma and Al-Salam camps for displaced people in the Nyala area, she added.
"With all the displacements that are happening, these camps are finding themselves welcoming new arrivals," Almagro said.
All have been uprooted by violence which local sources in the area said appeared to be carried out by so-called Rapid Support Forces, a type of militia.
International peacekeepers said there have been reports of looting, arson and civilian casualties.
