The British Royal Mint has struck 20 pound silver coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War-I.

A total of 250,000 such coins has been created, each carrying an image of Britannia watching as the first British troops set sail across the Channel, The Guardian reported today.

The coin, designed by sculptor John Bergdahl, is only the second 20 pound coin struck by the Royal Mint, after another 250,000 - 20 pound coins were struck last year to celebrate the birth of Prince George.

"I decided to use the figure of Britannia in order to represent all of the allies who took part, most of whom were British or drawn from the British Empire," Bergdahl was quoted as saying by the paper.

The coin not only commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first World War, but also honours the bravery and sacrifice of those who answered the call to fight for king and the country, Royal Mint's director of commemorative coin and bullion and medals, Shane Bissett said.
