20-year-old man arrested for marrying before legal age

Police here have arrested a man, who is only six months short of 21, the legal age of marriage, for tying the nuptial knot a little early.

Ajay, who is twenty-and-half years old, was arrested last night following a complaint by the Women and Child Development Department under The Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006 (PCMA), said inspector Sudhir Kumar Das of Vijay Nagar police station.

Under the law, the minimum age of marriage is 21 for man and 18 for woman.

As per the complaint, Ajay married his girl friend (who is 20 years old) at a temple on October 10, and got the illegal marriage 'notarised'.
 

Under the PCMA, a man who is above 18 but short of 21 years can be sentenced to an imprisonment up to two years or face a fine of up to Rs one lakh or both.
