A 20-year-old youth drowned in Ganga river when he went to take a bath in it in Mahrajpur area here.
Jeetu along with six of his friends performed puja at a temple in Deori ghat here yesterday and then went to take a bath in Ganga, police said today.
While bathing, Jeetu slipped from the staircase of the ghat and fell into the river.
Following this, three of his friends jumped into the water to rescue him but they were drifted away by a current in the river, SP (Rural) Surendra Tiwari said.
However, people present at the ghat rescued the four and brought them to a nearby hospital where Jeetu was declared dead, the SP said, adding, the three youths admitted to the hospital were stated to be stable.
