At least 2,000 people of the Bru community from Mizoram living in villages bordering Tripura have taken shelter in North Tripura district since Sunday evening, official sources said today.
They (people) took shelter in their relatives houses following a fear psychosis that their houses might be attacked by the ethnic Mizos, though no incident of any recent conflict between the Mizos and Brus were reported in the Mizoram villages bordering North Tripura, they said.
The North Tripura district administration has contacted the district administration of neighbouring Mamit district of Mizoram to take them back and it was known that officials from Mizoram would arrive here to convince them for taking them back by assuring full safety and security.
Tension sparked off in Bru dominated villages in Mizoram following kidnap of two Mizos and an employee of a telecom tower company on November 23 last by National Liberation Front of Tripura aided by a belligerent group of Brus in Mizoram side. The telecom tower company employee belonged to West Bengal.
Young Mizo Association (YMA), a wing of youths and Zillaipal, an organisation of Mizo students have threatened to launch a search operation in the area unless the kidnapped persons were returned by the insurgents.
