200 kg of sea cucumber seized in Tuticorin

: About 200 kg of processed sea cucumber worth Rs. 20 lakh in the international market was seized at Madathur area here by Coastal marine group personnel and Gulf of Mannar Forest Department officials.

The sea cucumber had been hoarded in a godown owned by one Murugesan for being smuggled out of the country, police said.

They seized a bike and a car and arrested two persons. The owner is absconding.

This is the third such seizure of sea cucumber, which has been classified as an endangered coral species and their harvest is banned under the Wildlife Protection Act.

About 300 kg of sea cucumber was seized from a country boat by the Coastal Marine police in Rameswaram on July 9 while one person was arrested for possessing about 400 kg of the same on July 2.
