Nearly 200 stranded passengers, including women and children, were rescued in a night-long operation in Jammu and Kashmir's frontier district of Kupwara, police said today.

The passengers were stranded near Sadhna Top along Kupwara-Karnah road following landslides, triggered by heavy snowing, last night, a police spokesman said.

Over three-ft of snow fell on high altitude areas, including Sadna Top, setting off avalanches due to which over two dozen passenger vehicles and an ambulance got stranded.

Army and the civil administration immediately launched a rescue operation and took nearly 200 passengers to safety, the spokesman said.

The operation, supervised by top police, army and civil officers, continued throughout the night despite inclement weather.
