22 doctors convicted for illegal sex determination in 2011

As many as 22 doctors and four employees of 21 clinics were punished in 2011 for violations of Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Sudip Bandyopadhyay told Rajya Sabha in reply to a written query.

The accused were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to three years and imposed and a fine between Rs 1,000 and Rs 60,000, he said.

Of the total 26 accused, 13 doctors and four employees of a clinic were from Maharashtra, seven doctors from Haryana, and two from Madhya Pradesh, the minister said.
