23-year old accused found hanging in Salem prison

In a custodial death, a 23-year old accused, detained under the stringent Goondas Act and lodged in the Salem jail, was today found hanging in his cell.

Ajithkumar, hailing from Komarapalayam in Namakkal District of Tamil Nadu, was arrested on October 24 in connection with a robbery case and lodged in the Salem Prison, police said.

Since he was involved in various other offences, the district administration has ordered his detention under the Goondas Act a couple of days ago, they said.

Ajithkumar was lodged in a cell in 8th block along with three other accused.

His cell mates, who had gone to watch a film screened in the auditorium being Saturday today, on returning, found Ajithkumar hanging dead from a ceiling fan using a 'lungi', police said adding further investigation was on.
