Asif Ahmad Bhat consumed the substance at his home in Khushrai Kalan in Srigufwara, 45 km from here, a police spokesman said.
Bhat was rushed to district hospital where he breathed his last, the spokesman said, adding, the motive behind his taking such an extreme step was not known.
